“High relief” coins have a defined image projecting out of a flat field. A coin’s relief refers to the image on the coin, and the distance between the lowest point of the field and the highest point of the design. President Roosevelt enjoyed the high reliefs created by the Greeks, and commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to produce a beautiful high relief design.
